About Us

Rudraksh Retreat: Named after the sacred Rudrākṣa beads, born of Lord Shiva’s tears and revered for their power to purify, energize, and protect, was envisioned as a sanctuary where spirit and nature may embrace as one.

Our journey began in 2006, when a Bangalorean and a Britisher fell in love in Gokarna, and with Gokarna. Over the years, that love blossomed into a vision: to create a serene space that offers stillness for the inner journey while celebrating the timeless wisdom of Indian spirituality and the living traditions of the Halakki Gouda community.

Here, yoga is not about a sequence of asanas but an elevation into a deeper way of being, a sādhanā that opens doors to silence, strength and balance.

At the heart of Rudraksh lies reverence for Bhūmi Devī (Mother Earth), a resolve to walk gently upon her bosom, preserving ancient traditions of agriculture and healing even as we embrace newer, sustainable ways of living.

Every stone, every sack of earth and material that now shapes this retreat was carried by hand across the fields, with care to ensure that nothing was wasted.

What stands today is the fruit of love, sweat, creativity and devotion, woven together with the blessings of skilled, willing hands.

Rudraksh is thus not merely a retreat, but a heartfelt ārpaṇa: an offering of gratitude to India’s soil, her culture, and the seekers who come here in search of peace and inner awakening.

Rudraksh Retreat

At Rudraksh Retreat, simplicity, nature and soulful stillness come together in quiet harmony by the sea. Nestled among palms, gardens and traditionally farmed fields, less than a kilometre from Gokarna town and the sacred Atmalinga installed at the Mahabaleshwara Temple, Rudraksh feels both secluded and connected. Surrounded by lush greenery and open skies, it is a space where the spirit and senses gently blend into the rural landscape and the slower pace of coastal life.

Leaving the vehicles behind, your journey begins as you pass through a stile gate and take a peaceful 150 metre stroll along a sandy footpath between cultivated agricultural fields, where the sea greets you and silence naturally descends. Slipping through our gate into a green oasis, the path winds toward our retreat, built of local laterite stone with panoramic views of pristine nature. Here, time slows, nature soothes and every step invites you to breathe more deeply and rediscover yourself.

Whether you come for an urban detox, a lazy beach holiday, cultural exploration or a spiritual retreat, simplicity, balance and authenticity shape your stay, while the timeless spirit of Gokarna lends a gentle flow to each passing day.

Our rooms, cooled by natural tiles and ocean breezes, are free from televisions and air conditioning so that nature may guide the pace of your hours. Solar heated water, filtered drinking water and thoughtful touches ensure comfort while honouring the earth and its gifts. Spacious verandahs, earthy textures and the constant presence of fresh sea air create an atmosphere that feels grounding, restful and deeply connected to the natural surroundings.

Wake slowly to the sound of waves and birdsong, or rise early to watch the first rays of the sun touch the distant palms from your verandah. Spend unhurried afternoons beneath swaying coconut trees, wander through the surrounding greenery, or simply pause to watch the changing colours of the sky as day melts gently into evening. By night, the Rudraksh garden opens to a vast starlit sky, an open invitation to wonder, stillness and quiet reflection.

Just steps away lies Gokarna Beach, with its string of rustic cafés and restaurants, and panoramic vistas of the Arabian Sea — less than a minute’s walk from our secluded paradise. To the north, the sands stretch endlessly into the horizon, while to the south, the serene Ramtirtha Temple rests in headland greenery overlooking the sea. Whether you seek peaceful solitude, meaningful conversations, spiritual reflection or the simple joy of slowing down, the atmosphere here gently draws you inward. Open skies, soulful company and the eternal music of the ocean weave together a charm that dissolves the weight of the outside world.

Our Location

Gokarna is not merely a place on the map — it is a vibration, an invocation that resounds with the timeless presence of Shiva. The entire town hums with a quiet, potent energy that awakens something ancient within the seeker’s heart. On auspicious days, its narrow, unhurried streets overflow with pilgrims — barefoot souls carrying coconuts and flowers, their chants mingling with the scent of incense and the salt of the sea. At the heart of this sacred rhythm stands the Mahabaleshwar Temple, the spiritual nucleus around which Gokarna’s life revolves.

Historical records discovered in a distant empire mention its renovation as early as the 4th century — suggesting that the temple itself is far older, its beginnings veiled in the mists of antiquity. For countless generations, sages, saints, and simple devotees alike have come to bow before the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva, believed to embody the very essence of cosmic power. Around it rise nearly a hundred smaller shrines, each resonating with the same timeless devotion. Little wonder, then, that Gokarna is often called the Kashi of the South — for here, the divine feels close enough to touch, and even the air seems to pulse with prayer.

Yet Gokarna is not only for the ascetic or the pilgrim. In recent times, travelers of every kind — seekers of stillness, wanderers of the world, lovers of sea and sky — have found their way here. The six sunlit beaches that cradle the town invite you to walk barefoot upon golden sands where the eternal rhythms of tide and faith still hold sway. Between temple bells and the laughter of travelers, between humble village homes and yoga mats unfurled by the shore, Gokarna gently blends the sacred with the simple joy of living.

The days move unhurriedly here — mornings filled with the aroma of coffee and the sound of distant conch shells, evenings glowing with the orange hue of lamps lit by the sea. From here, paths unfold toward many nearby wonders — the mysterious Yana Rocks, the roaring cascade of Jog Falls, the ocean-side temple of Murudeshwar which is a part of the Gokarna Temple, and the ancient shrines of Dharmasthala, Kollur Mookambika, and Udupi further south. To the north lie Dandeli’s forests and Goa’s carefree shores. But Gokarna, once found, rarely lets you go. Many arrive for a few days — and end up returning again and again, drawn by something they cannot quite name, yet always, deeply, feel.
